Young Artist Experience (YAE) was developed in 1992 in Whistler, British Columbia, by Ann Popma for the Whistler Centre for Business and the Arts. Distinguished pianist and professor Jane Coop served as Artistic Director for the Aaron,Eric&Lukeprogram; a two-week residential retreat for young pianists mentored by renowned guest faculty and facilitators for explorations in other arts media. In 1995 the program shifted from solo piano to chamber music with strings and piano and in 1998 YAE moved to the University of British Columbia. UBC’s School of Music provides meeting and practice facilities and the beautiful campus offers indoor and outdoor pools, fitness facilities, the Nitobe Gardens, the TRIUMF lab and a variety of other resources for the

YAE is unique among summer chamber music programs for young artists in Canada, because its educational mandate is founded on the concept of integrative multi-disciplinary education for musicians. With its current Artistic Director, Professor Rena Sharon and Associate Directors, Corey Hamm and Jasper Wood, the content includes studies in sciences, humanities, arts and social responsibility, in addition to traditionally rigorous training in the practice and performance of the chamber music repertoire. We believe musicians require a sense of wonder and curiosity about the elements of their art including physics, biology, psychology, mathematics, medicine, global music and dance. We want our students to learn that as musicians they offer a genuine gift of creative expression to their communities which may be helpful in many aspects of healing as well. Chamber music requires complete co-operation in a democratic, leaderless, non-hierarchical setting. To meet its challenges we must exercise tolerance, compromise and flexibility, as well as imagination, passion, empathy and sincerity. The consequence when that agenda is fulfilled is a shared experience of creative collaboration and aspiration. YAE’s leadership is identified with the network of educators who are building youth networks for peace at the community and global level.

Whole WorldOur student roster includes many award-winning young artists and others for whom the music/science studies have led to interdisciplinary professional careers. Our sessions have included integrated activities such as: a Day-long workshop on Artistic Freedom of Expression, which comprised talks and classes with Craig Jones of the Civil Liberties Association, the late Nikolai Korndorff, Russian composer, speaking about creative and artistic expression in Stalinist Russia, and Russian cellist Yegor Dyachkov, in partnership with the Vancouver Recital Society.

YAE has been fortunate to include among its faculty some of Canada’s most prominent artists-teachers, including Jane Coop, Anton Kuerti, Marc Durand, Martin Beaver, Amanda Forsyth, Eric Wilson, David Harding, Martin Riseley, Andrew Dawes, Mark Fewer, and many others.

Through its collaboration with the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival our roster of guest artists has featured Scott St. John, Yegor Dyachkov, Anton Nel, the Borromeo Quartet and other internationally renowned performers. Our student roster includes many award-winning youths, and others for whom the music/science studies have led to interdisciplinary professional careers.

YAE string orchestra performed an arrangement of Shostakovich’s 8th string quartet, composed in commemoration of the victims of World War II and the Stalinist regime.

YAE 2005 hosted the first Youth Peace Jam, an evening that brought together several Vancouver youth peace groups and the International YMCA Youth Peace Network to share music, cultures and ideas.

YAE 2006 joined with Artsway Health/Arts Society for performances at the Youville and Louis Brier senior care facilities. This focus was enhanced by a workshop with music therapy specialist Ashley Tait. As well, we have joined with the Creative Peace Network’s Peace it Together workshop for teens from the Middle East and Vancouver, in an event combining film and music at the Stanley Theatre.
